Iowans have dealt with their fair share of tornadoes in recent years. Nearly 2,100 tornadoes have touched down in Iowa since 1950, including a June 1, 2007 tornado which tore through Muscatine County and an April 13, 2006 which injured 30 people and caused millions of dollars in damage in Iowa City.

Fatalities have occurred in fewer than two percent of the storms. The state’s deadliest tornado since 1950 occurred in 1968, when an F-5 rated tornado, the strongest possible, touched down in Franklin County. The storm killed 13 and injured 462 while crossing four counties.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center maintains a database of tornadoes, and the estimated intensity of each tornado which is measured using the Fujita and Enhanced Fujita scale. This database contains tornadoes of all strengths. Locations of the tornadoes are approximate and are based on the point they were believed to have touched down.
